New Year Day Devotional (1 John 1:5-6 - Mark Hong)

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth."
- 1 John 1:5-6 -

John describes our holy God as the light. Light represents God's character, goodness, holiness, and loving-kindness (hesed in Hebrew). Darkness represents, evil, wickedness, and falsehood. In God, there is no darkness at all. He is full of goodness and loving kindness. He is completely holy. Thus we should walk in His light not compromising with sin. Thus, we should seek integrity in the Lord most importantly during this new year.

As sinful human beings, how can we accomplish the goal of walking in the light? It is claiming to be without sin (we deceive ourselves). We should instead confess our sins to God and to each other (8-9; James 5:16 - Therefore, confess your sins to one another). If you do so, the Lord our God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (9). This morning I attended the S. Asia Leaders Conference. There I heard speakers confessing their sins openly and making new resolutions before God and their fellow brothers and sisters. I felt true godliness in this fellowship. Let us get rid of hypocrisy and seek integrity in the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us the new year, 2021. Let us walk in the light of the Lord, confessing our sins to you and to one another that we may be forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness.
