Mark 13:22-24 (Mark Hong)

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take it; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’ he said to them.”
- Mark 13:22-24 -

At this Passover, Jesus explains the meaning of His death on the cross. His body will be torn apart and shed blood. He is speaking of His blood as the blood of the covenant (24). It means Jesus' death is a redemptive one, like the blood of the animals in the OT (Lev 4:3-7). Luke 22:20 says it is the new covenant. It is new for its value and its effectiveness can't be compared to the old covenant. The old covenant was through the animals and limited, just for the past year. But the new covenant is the perfect blood of the Son of God and its effectiveness is forever. It was once and for all (Heb 9:28). Here, 'poured out' in Greek is a passive present participle. It implies that the effect of His pouring of the blood is always a present reality. That is why Jesus said that He pours His blood for many.

Prayer: Praise be to the Lord Jesus who willingly and voluntarily went to Calvary for our redemption. May we receive this deep grace in the blood of Jesus in this Lent season.
