"Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."
- Revelation 22:1-2 -
Here, we see that Jesus and the Father share their unhindered reign of grace and life over the whole city. Where the visions of the throne- room of God became ever more complex and cluttered in earlier chapters, here is a direct focus on the reign of God. The ‘river of the water of life’ that flows from it has many antecedents in Scripture – the stream that gives life to the righteous in Psalm 1, Isaiah 33:21, Ezekiel 47. This river represents the gift of God himself; in the absence of any other mention, this must surely be a symbol of the Spirit of God who brings life to his people. We are not there yet. This vision gives us hope of a wonderful future.
Prayer: Eternal God, all things come from you, and in you all things exist. Thank you that I live in your sight and by your grace.
