1 Chronicles 11:9-10 (Mark Hong)

"And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord Almighty was with him. These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised."

1 Chronicles 11:9-10

David's greatness is described with two aspects. First, the Lord was with him. This is the most important aspect for us to pursue. Second, he had mighty warriors. Any leader needs a good team around them. David couldn’t function without some loyal and brave supporters. We read their names: Joab, Jashobeam, Eleazar, Abishai, Benaiah, and the rest (and a lot more in verses 26–47). The stories of these mighty men encourage us to remember that the part we play in God’s service is valued, even if we’re not at the top in terms of up-front ministry. David had ‘the three’ (v. 12) and ‘the thirty’ (v. 15) behind him, but there were long lists of others. Jesus had the twelve, out of whom he chose the three, but he also had the women who provided for his and their daily needs. Church leaders have their church councils or equivalent—but every church member who serves in any way is valued, because the leader cannot lead effectively without support.

If you are a church leader, do you let everyone know they’re valued, even if all they do is wash up? Or do you take them for granted? If you are not at the top and your service is behind the scenes, do you realize how important your support is for God’s church to function effectively?

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me to recognize where I need to be more loyal and supportive of my church leaders. Help me to see where I can use the gifts you have given me to offer encouragement and help (edited from Encounter with God).
