“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
- Luke 12:4-7 -
In Luke 12, Jesus encourages His disciples not to be afraid of the coming persecution. It is because the truth will be revealed (2-3). The evil ones can kill our body, but they can't do anything to our soul (4-5). In truth, the Father, God protects our lives (6-7). Jesus will recognize our life and faith when we stand before God (8-9). What is more, the Holy Spirit abides with us as we faithfully live a life of faith (10-12). This text encourages us not to fall into fear while facing life-threatening persecution and dangers. We should be faithful before God, fearing Him and loving Him. He abides with us through His Holy Spirit and we can testify Jesus is our Lord, even in a time of persecution.
Prayer: O Lord, in you who abides with us, we find peace. Help us to walk with the Spirit and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit even though we walk through dark valleys.
