“and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.’ Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.“
- Luke 13:11-13 -
Jesus' healing of a crippled woman teaches us Jesus' compassion for us. This woman has been crippled by a spirit for 18 years. She could not straighten up at all. She lived in great discomfort and shame. Both of my sisters (close to 80) have to walk bent over as they have became older. Jesus saw her with compassion. He healed her by laying His hands on her. She then gave praise to God. Yet the synagogue leader criticized Jesus, saying that He violated the Sabbath law. He missed the beautiful work of God as he was being legalistic with the regulation of the Sabbath law. Jesus cared and healed the miserable woman. Jesus freed her from the oppression of the evil spirit and long suffering. He restored her to live as a daughter of Abraham. Her groans were turned into praises to God. Jesus our Lord is compassionate and also a mighty Lord who heals us. We need to come to Him.
Prayer: Lord, we praise you for your compassionate love for us. You came to this earth and even died on the cross for our forgiveness, healing and restoration. May I live a life that praises you and serve others with the compassion of Jesus.
