“Jesus replied, ‘The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.”
- Luke 20:34-36 -
The Sadducees denied the resurrection. They came to Jesus with a story that a woman who lost her husband and 6 brothers who married her according to the law (Dt 25:5-6). All of them died without having any child and she also died. They asked Jesus, "Whose wife will she be at the resurrection?" This was asked to ridicule the truth of the resurrection. We see here how dark their thought world was as they denied the resurrection (full of death, misfortune and tragedy). When we have no hope of the resurrection, we are caught in the darkness of this world. In the resurrection, we live as spiritual beings without marriage for Jesus is our bridegroom. We live as God's glorious children. Just as the Lord our God is the living one we also live in Him forever. In that sense, He is the God of the living; God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob. He is the God of each of us. So Peter said that we have a living hope in 1 Peter 1:3-4, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you." Praise be to the Lord our God the God of the living.
Prayer: Lord, the world is dark with sickness, tragedy and darkness. But we rejoice in the hope of the resurrection. Lord, fill us with the living hope in your kingdom so that we overcome the darkness of our time and bring glory to you.
