“As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. ‘Truly I tell you,’ he said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.’”
- Luke 21:1-4 -
The widow in our text is unnamed. Yet, she is a beautiful example for us to learn how to love God. She put two small copper coins (1/128 of a denarius). Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others" for the rich gave out of their abundance. But she gave all she had. It shows her rich thanks to God. She could be full of complaints with her poor life as a widow. People mistreated her and even devoured her house (20:47). Her devotion reminds us of the churches of Macedonia who in the midst of extreme poverty, gave richly for the relief of the saints in Jerusalem (2 Cor 8:2).
Living in this materialistic culture, we should live as cheerful givers for we are God's people (2 Cor 9:7). We should live a simple life and in contentment for we have God's rich grace in Jesus Christ our Lord. On this Thanksgiving day, let us thank God for His rich grace in Jesus. Let us remember what God has done for us during the year 2020. Let us live as cheerful givers.
Prayer: Lord, your steadfast love endures forever. We praise you. May our love to you be as pure as the widow in this text.
