Luke 24:32 (Mark Hong)

“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
- Luke 24:32 -

Jesus had risen, but on that day his two disciples were going to the town of Emmaus in despair. They had heard the report of the empty tomb, but they didn't believe in the resurrection of the Lord. The risen Jesus drew near to them, but they failed to recognize him. Jesus had a long Bible study with them about the Messiah's suffering, death and glory till they reached their destination. Arriving at Emmaus, they had dinner together. When Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus (31). Jesus then vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (32). When Jesus spoke the words of God, the Holy Spirit warmed their hearts. It led them to open their eyes to see the risen Jesus.

We also meet the risen Christ through the words of God. When we read the words, our hearts burn with the glowing of the Spirit and our spiritual eyes are opened.

These two disciples returned to Jerusalem that same night (7 miles) and joyfully witnessed the resurrection of Jesus. Through the words of God, may we open our eyes and see Jesus who is with us in this Christmas season.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, as we read the words, may our hearts burn with the Holy Spirit. May you open our eyes. Help us to see that you, our Immanuel, is with us.
