“Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, ‘This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.’”
- Luke 24:45-48 -
The two disciples returned from Emmaus and shared with the eleven disciples that Jesus indeed has risen and they had met him. And Jesus suddenly appeared to them and said, "Peace be with you" (36). They thought that they were seeing a ghost. Jesus proved his resurrection, showing his hands and feet. He even ate fish before them. He then opened their minds to understand the Scripture and taught them about the Messiah's suffering, death and resurrection. He wanted them to believe that His resurrection had happened, according to the Scriptures. And that Jesus Himself is the promised Messiah to come.
Jesus wanted them to be his witnesses from Jerusalem to all nations (47-48). He promised that He will send them the Holy Spirit to carry out this call of God. Indeed, these weak disciples turned out to be powerful witnesses with the help of the Holy Spirit, which can be seen in the book of Acts. This is the very call of God for us, based on the Scriptures, that we have faith in Jesus, our risen Savior, and witness Him to the ends of the earth.
In the ministry of His words, we also see such disciples being raised for Jesus, to open their minds to understand the Scriptures and have faith in Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for opening our minds so that we understand the Scriptures and have faith in you. Please abide with us in the power of the Spirit so that we witness you in our community and even to the ends of the earth.
