“And Abimelek asked Abraham, ‘What was your reason for doing this?’ Abraham replied, ‘I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.”
- Genesis 20:10-12 -
Lies are a reflection of the condition of the heart. Abraham revealed his fear and insecurity when he lied that his wife was his sister. As Abraham confessed, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife’" (11), the root of our fear was that he didn't trust God's protection. In reality, God protected Abraham and Sarah. Abimelech, and his officials had the fear of God (8). We need to see in all situations the living God, His protection upon us, that we should confront the situation by speaking the whole truth – and witness God redeem the situation to our benefit and His glory. God can be trusted with our life.
Prayer: Dear Lord God, you are faithful and you are trustworthy. Please forgive me for my fear and dishonest behavior. Help me to live a truthful life before you.
