Mark 10:5-9 (Mark Hong)

“‘It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,’ Jesus replied. ‘But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
- Mark 10:5-9 -

In our text, some Pharisees came to Jesus and tested Him, asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife”? (2). Jesus answered them based on Deuteronomy 24:1. He spoke the background of that law. The law of divorce was originally given to protect the family, for people so easily got rid of their wives: "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law" (5). Jesus then taught the original meaning of marriage based on Genesis 2, the first marriage. God created man and woman to become one through marriage and serve God's will together. God wanted them to be happy and spread God's blessing to the world. Marriage was established in God's sovereignty; no one should break it (9). Jesus explained further in verses 11-12 that divorce causes one to commit adultery. We see so many broken families in our society. It is the work of the devil. Each of us should remember God's will and purpose in our marriage and be faithful to this holy will of God upon our family.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the blessing of our marriage that we live a happy life in serving your will. May we be faithful to you and to our marriage.
