“‘I am against you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.’”
- Nahum 2:13 -
Nahum was written in 621BC-612BC. It was written to declare the destruction of Assyria, the enemy of the Israelites. Thus, it declares the liberation of the Israelites from the cruel oppression of Assyria. It declares that the Lord our God is the sovereign Ruler of the world. He accomplishes His righteous purpose. In the Bible, 'Assyria' is the archetype of cruel world power against God.
Chapter 1: the wrath of God against Assyria.
Chapter 2: the destruction of Assyria.
Chapter 3: the cause of Assyria's destruction.
"The chapter 2 ends with somber words: ‘I am against you’ (13). There can be no worse scenario! It brings into sharp relief the title given to Jesus, ‘Immanuel (which means “God with us”)’ (Matt 1:23).
The contrast could not be greater!" (from Encounter with God).
Prayer: Praise be to the Lord our God who accomplishes His righteous rule and purpose. Now Afghanistan people, especially Christians suffer beyond one can say by Taliban. We can cry out for them in hope for this modern day Assyria. We thank God that we have the beautiful promise of Immanuel.
