“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.”
- Hebrews 4:1-2 -
Many of the Israelites failed to enter the Promised Land through unbelief and disobedience. The same was true with the first-century and it is true with the 21st-century community. We must make be careful (1), we must maintain faith in God (2,3) and make every effort to enter that rest (11). This raises a question at the heart of Hebrews, which has troubled and divided generations of Christians. The author warns a real and present danger of missing out from God’s promise. “God has provided a future, but we must receive it; just as the Israelites had to enter the Promised Land physically, so we must continually appropriate by faith the promise of God’s future” (from Encounter with God).
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for giving your life on the cross so that we who believe enter into the eternal Sabbath rest You have provided.
