“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.’”
- Genesis 14:18-20 -
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. In Genesis 14, we continually see Abraham's mature faith. In the international conflicting situations, his nephew was taken by the great king, Kedorlaomer. Abraham pursued Kedorlaomer and rescued Lot, sacrificing so much material (as he took 318 men) and even risking his own life. By God's grace, he could win the battle and rescued Lot. On his way back, Melchizedek met and blessed Abraham. In his blessing, Melchizedek taught Abraham, who God is: "God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth" (19). And also taught him that the victory was given to him by God (20). Accepting this blessing, Abraham gave Melchizedek, the tenth of everything. This is the first tithe in the Bible. Thus, in tithing, you accept God's sovereign grace in your life.
Prayer: Lord, you are the "God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth." All I have come from you. I give myself to you, thanking your love, grace and provision of victory.
