"So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.”
- Luke 17:10 -
In this passage Luke teaches us true humility in four different ways. First, humble people know how to care for the vulnerable (1, 2). Understanding that his or her life can offend or hurt another’s life and faith, a humble person carefully walks the life of faith.
Second, humble people forgive promptly (3, 4). Understanding how he or she is forgiven by Jesus, a humble person forgives even seven times in one day. It means he or she lives a life of grace in Jesus.
Third, humble people live in faith. Understanding that even a mustard seed-sized faith is tremendously powerful, a humble person faces everything in faith.
Finally, humble people live lives of service (7–10). In Jesus' time, a servant or a slave had to serve their master without any acknowledgement or gratitude for their efforts. Jesus teaches us that we should not seek any acknowledgement or awards of people in our life of serving. In other words, we serve for Jesus to receive all glory.
Prayer: Lord, grant me true humility so that I do not hurt those who are vulnerable, forgive unconditionally and serve without seeking any recognition. Most importantly, may I seek only your glory in all my service.
