“And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”

Our text teaches us that believing in the name of Jesus means that we live a life of love; love one another in obedience to Jesus (23). This means that we live in God and God lives in us (24). How can we live a life of love? It is by following the example of Jesus. In love, Jesus laid down his life for us. Thus, we ought to lay down our lives for others. We shouldn't love merely with words and speech, but in actions and in truth (18). Yes, true love should be expressed by caring for others in need. So love is not a theory, but a verb. In the life of love, we grow in a deeper relationship with Christ.

Prayer: Lord, pour out your love in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Let us grow in your love and in the life of love during the year 2021. Hallelujah!
