Gnosticism taught that the spirit is wholly good and matter is wholly bad (from Encounter with God). This teaching was problematic since it denied Jesus' coming in the flesh. It then denies the teaching of the Bible that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for our sins. The biblical teaching is that Jesus is both fully God and, also, fully man. The early church was facing the heretical teaching of Gnosticism and it was prevailing in the Christian world.

In that situation, John encouraged the believers with the hope that the one who is in them (Jesus) is greater than the one who is in the world. He gives His people the wisdom and power to overcome all evil and false teachings. We too can have the assurance of victory in Jesus over all evil and false teachings of our time.

Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge that you dwell in me and your wisdom and power are greater than the devil of this world. Help me to walk with you in 2021 and have many victories.
