“But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.’ So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.’”
- Genesis 11:5-8 -
In our text, we see how we have many different languages today. We also see how the people were scattered on the earth. In Genesis 11, we see people's pride to be like God and to make a name for themselves. So they built a tower. God needed to limit their power. So God confused their language and scattered them on the earth.
In Noah's time, people were exuberant and they became proud. And all their intentions were evil. God wiped them out with a flood (Gen 6:1-5). Yet people quickly forgot what had happened and they did things against God's will. Though they deserved to be wiped out, God remembered His rainbow covenant and only stopped their sinful activities. He then called Abraham and started His redemptive work and accomplished our salvation in Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Praise be to the Lord, who is holy, yet merciful. Help us to be thankful of your grace. May we humble ourselves before God and do His will in our life.
