“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.”
- Song of Songs 8:6 -
We see in our text (chapter 7:7-8:14), we see the climax of the love between Solomon and the Shulammite woman. The Shulammite woman asks to place her like a seal over her groom's heart and on his arm. In the ancient time, a seal was a very important item that guaranteed a person's authority or rights to property. So, she asked him to regard herself as the most precious one, keeping her close by, just as people carried it around with a string. She also says that 'love is as strong as death.' It meant that her love for Solomon will never change and she and Solomon will have great joy. Song of songs ends with her song, "Come away, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or like a young stag on the spice-laden mountains" (8:14). This is the song she sang before her marriage to Solomon. It implies that her love will be the same forever.
This love between Solomon and the Shulamite woman resembles the love between Christ and His brides. Christ redeemed us through His death on the cross. And He keeps us like a seal over His heart. Truly His love is as strong as death. So we too love Him with all our heart, life and strength.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for your love that is as strong as death. I love you too with all my heart, life and strength.
