“So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, ‘Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.’ Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.”
- Judges 7:5-6 -
Gideon's battle against the Midianites was an interesting one. When Gideon summoned for the battle, 32,000 men responded and came. But God said to Gideon that he had too many. It seemed to be too small for the Midianties were numerous sands on the seashore. God wanted to fight this battle and let people know for sure the victory came from God. So Gideon let go of all fearful people to home. And only 10,000 remained. God still said that they were too many. Another process of selecting soldiers were through the attitude of drinking water from the brook. Those who drink out of cupped hands should go, but those who kneel down and drink water should go home. Gideon had to fight the battle with just 300 men. Yet he won the complete victory.
It reminds us of the words: "This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s" (2 Chr 20:15b).
We have the battle against our Midianites. We are surrounded by them who are against God's truth and hate God's people. We are too few in numbers and resources. Yet we should know that God is involved in this battle and He wants to use us. If we follow God's instruction (His words) carefully and do His will, we have His amazing victories. We'll see God's kingdom advancing and bring glory to Him.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that our battle belongs to you. Help us to depend you alone that we win our battle and bring glory to you.
