“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
- Hebrews 12:1-2 -
Our text tells us two tasks we have in Christ: First, fix our eyes on Jesus who He is and what He did for us. We are not looking at other saints or at our situations, but keep our eyes fixed on Jesus – for He is the author and perfecter of faith. Second, to be disciplined in Jesus. The word, ‘discipline’ occurs ten times in verses 5–11. God disciplines us, allowing hardship in our life. But it is His true love; He wants us to share in His holiness. Thus, we should strengthen our feeble arms and knees in the time of the trials, but rise and run the race marked out for us (1).
Prayer: Lord, thank you for saving us from sins through your sufferings. Help us to fix our eyes on Jesus in the time of the trials and run the race to the end.
